The National Science Foundation has awarded a three-year, $650,000 grant to a team of researchers from Penn State and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign who are looking for a system to improve the safety and efficiency of construction equipment. The engineers plan to develop a system that combines cyber and physical components to interact for maximum effectiveness.

Project "Safe and Efficient Cyber-Physical Operation System for Construction Equipment" will begin in January 2016 and will initially focus on mobile cranes. Part of the research will look at determining how to integrate a camera, sensors, virtual models of the construction site and the intelligent reasoning mechanism into one effective system.
