Komatsu and its subsidiary, EARTHBRAIN, have formed a strategic partnership with AIM Intelligent Machines to expand autonomous construction technology in the U.S. and Japan.

The companies are combining Komatsu's Smart Construction digital platform with AIM's autonomous operation technology for bulldozers and hydraulic excavators. The integrated system uses digital construction plans and terrain data to enable machines to perform earthmoving tasks autonomously.

According to the companies, Komatsu autonomous machines are already operating at customer jobsites in the U.S., with deployment in Japan planned to begin in 2027.

The system is designed to support construction planning, autonomous operation, progress tracking and performance data within a single digital workflow. AIM's technology can also be retrofitted to existing bulldozers and excavators, allowing contractors to add autonomous capabilities without replacing their current equipment.

The partnership is intended to help contractors improve productivity, address labor shortages and advance digital construction workflows.
