Iowa's Interstate 74 bridge has been waiting years to get replaced. Local transportation officials say the structure is outdated and not equipped to handle the amount of traffic crossing the bridge. Iowa's transportation department has proposed delaying funding for construction on the bridge.
While in the Quad-Cities area to speak at an event, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood will also meet local congressmen and other leaders to view the I-74 bridge and discuss its replacement. LaHood hopes the I-74 bridge will remind Congress of the need to pass a long-term transportation bill so states and cities can receive funding and infrastructure construction projects can proceed.
