Construction on a $2.9 million waterfront improvement project in the Bronx was officially put on hold last month as more than 100 pieces of Native American artifacts have been uncovered. The artifacts, which include ceramics, pottery, stone tools and more date between 200 AD and 1000 AD and could be one of the most important archaeological finds in New York City history.
Ensuring the artifacts are protected has become the top priority. While construction will eventually be completed, the city may be forced to redesign the waterfront project to go around the archaeological site. The city may even attempt to declare the area a landmark to protect it from future development.
