County intends to dissolve its current contract with Turner and hire a replacement firm to finish the Valley Medical Center expansion construction project

San Jose Mercury News

Santa Clara County has officially removed Turner Construction from building the Valley Medical Center expansion. The county intends to dissolve its current contract with Turner on Tuesday and hire a replacement firm to finish the construction project. According to County Executive Jeff Smith, they already have two potential builders lined up.

Turner Construction Found in Default by $300M on CA Medical Facility Project

The hospital project broke ground in 2009 with a scheduled completion of September 2015, but the project is apparently two years off track. The county has asked Turner to present an action plan and a realistic schedule for the project and also wants to include a financial agreement that would allow for penalties if the timetable is not met.

Santa Clara County claims Turner has not put the necessary resources into the project that is now behind schedule and costing the county in lost revenue. Turner claims the county hasn't completed design work and piles up change orders that have totaled more than 1,500 days of delays.
