Forbes and Dodge Data sorted through data to form a list of major cities and surrounding suburbs where the most money was spent on new construction in 2015. The list tallies the dollar value of construction starts for single and multifamily homes, office, retail, warehouses, healthcare facilities, educational buildings, manufacturing plants and research facilities, among others.
Topping the list was New York, NY, with $46.6 billion construction starts in 2015. Rounding out the top 20 were:

- Los Angeles - $11.7 billion
- Chicago - $11.5 billion
- Washington, DC - $11.3 billion
- Miami - $10.3
- Boston - $9.4 billion

- Seattle - $9.1 billion
- Lake Charles, LA - $8.4 billion
- Phoenix - $8.1 billion
- Orlando, FL - $6.9 billion
- San Francisco - $6.7 billion
- Denver - $6.5 billion
- Austin, TX - $6.4 billion
- Nashville - $5.4 billion
- Tampa, FL - $5.3 billion
- Twin Cities, MN - $5.1 billion
- San Antonio, TX - $4.7 billion
