Top Metro Areas for New Building Construction in 2015

New York topped the list of metro areas with the most building construction in 2015, while four Texas metro areas overcame the oil-market slump to also made the list

Forbes and Dodge Data sorted through data to form a list of major cities and surrounding suburbs where the most money was spent on new construction in 2015. The list tallies the dollar value of construction starts for single and multifamily homes, office, retail, warehouses, healthcare facilities, educational buildings, manufacturing plants and research facilities, among others.

Topping the list was New York, NY, with $46.6 billion construction starts in 2015. Rounding out the top 20 were:

  4. Los Angeles - $11.7 billion
  5. Chicago - $11.5 billion
  6. Washington, DC - $11.3 billion

  9. Atlanta - $9.4 billion
  10. Seattle - $9.1 billion
  11. Lake Charles, LA - $8.4 billion
  12. Phoenix - $8.1 billion
  13. Orlando, FL - $6.9 billion
  14. San Francisco - $6.7 billion
  15. Denver - $6.5 billion
  16. Austin, TX - $6.4 billion
  17. Nashville - $5.4 billion
  18. Tampa, FL - $5.3 billion
  19. Twin Cities, MN - $5.1 billion
