CeraTech Advances Leadership in Concrete Sustainability

CeraTech, a producer of durable, high performance, and low carbon cement for concrete, announced it has joined Architecture 2030's “The 2030 Challenge for Products” initiative. The 2030 Challenge is heavily focused on carbon reduction in the built environment through reduced use of fossil fuels. CeraTech endorses the "Challenge" to reach architects, code-generating bodies, and green rating organizations.

To meet the 2030 Challenge for Products, the embodied carbon-equivalent footprint reduction shall be increased to: 35% or better in 2015, 40% or better in 2020, 45% or better in 2025, and 50% or better in 2030. "Given that we are manufacturing a non-portland cement with the lowest carbon footprint in the industry, we are confident that we will be able to meet or exceed those milestones," states Mark Wasilko, CeraTech's Executive Vice President. "In fact, CeraTech's EPD rating also shows significant reductions in Total Primary Energy Consumption, Water Savings, and Climate Change/Global Warming Potential."

CeraTech's Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for ekkomaxx concrete is the first non-portland bulk cement concrete EPD. It enables architects, leading design firms, producers, and contractors to independently substantiate and confirm the tremendous environmental differences between portland and non-portland cement technologies. The EPD quantifies CERATECH Cement concrete offers a virtually zero carbon footprint, with a 95 percent reduction in the use of virgin resources, and dramatic 50 percent reduction in the use of water.

The ekkomaxx cement concrete EPD was prepared by Martha VanGeem, PE, LEED AP, BD+C, FACI, following guidelines set forth by the Carbon Leadership Forum’s North America Product Category Rules (PCR), with independent verification conducted by the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute under the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association’s (NRMCA) Program Operator Rules.
