5 Things To Know: FAA Task Force Recommends Drone Registry

Federal Aviation Administration will combine recommendations with public comment and issue rules in 2016

A Federal Aviation Administration task force recommends the government set up a simple registration system for anyone who owns an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), sometimes called “drone,” heavier than 250 grams, which is about half a pound.

Key points:

  1. The recommendations aren't the rules yet
  2. Recommendations focus on registering the owner, not each drone
  3. Name and address are the only registration requirements
  4. Don’t fall for registry scams
  5. All the other rules stand until further notice
