Contractors, FAA Battle Over Height of Cranes at San Diego Courthouse Construction Site

Contractors have lowered cranes nearly 100 ft. after airport authority expresses concern the cranes could cause a plane crash or clog regional air traffic

The San Diego county airport authority is looking to issue a restraining order on the height of construction cranes working on a downtown courthouse expansion. The airport authority believes the cranes could cause a plane crash or clog regional air traffic.

Contractors building the courthouse have lowered the three construction cranes from a height near 600 feet down to 511 feet, the height limit the FAA suggested last summer. The cranes have also been equipped with flags and lights to comply with FAA rules.

Attorneys for one of the contractors say the project won't be able to be completed if the FAA does not grant permission to raise the cranes more than 600 feet.
