Volvo's new L250G wheel loader fills a market need for a machine in the 39-ton (35 tonne) weight category purpose-built to load tri-axle on-highway trucks in two passes. The L250G wields a new 9-cubic-yard on a rare (for Volvo) Z-bar loader linkage for improved bucket-breakout and lifting forces.

Volvo Construction Equipment adapted emissions-reducing cooled exhaust gas recirculation and particulate filter with active regeneration proven since 2007 in Volvo trucks over billions of road miles to the D13 diesel that powers the L250G.

The 389-hp six-cylinder is mated to a Volvo Automatic Powershift transmission with a new locking torque converter. The Optishift control system integrates Volvo's patented Reverse-by-Braking (RBB) function – significantly reducing fuel consumption (up to 15%, according to Volvo) while improving operator comfort and driveline durability. When changing from forward to reverse (or vice versa), RBB applies the standard service brakes instead of the torque converter, slowing the machine and putting less stress on the converter and transmission. OptiShift can significantly reduce fuel consumption in operations such as load and carry – as well as in short cycle loading. Driveline lock up, meanwhile, improves drive response, rimpull, slope performance and fuel efficiency.
