Autocar, LLC has released the Smart Battery Cable for its ACX refuse trucks, a new safety feature designed to reduce the risk of electrical fires.

Refuse trucks operate in tough conditions where vibration, abrasion, and contamination can damage traditional unfused battery cables. When damaged, these cables can arc and ignite, posing risks to operators and equipment.

The Smart Battery Cable detects potential rub-through and alerts the operator through Autocar’s "Always Up" display in the event of a short circuit, allowing the vehicle to be stopped before thermal buildup occurs. A crank interlock prevents the engine from restarting without operator confirmation after inspection or repairs.

Building on Autocar’s ADAM active driver-assist system, the technology reflects the company’s focus on safety in severe-duty applications. Select ACX configurations now include the cable, with plans to standardize it across all models by 2027.
