Your Guide to DEF TLC
With selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology making its way into off-road engines, it's important to know how to properly manage diesel exhaust fluid.
Small amounts of DEF are sprayed into the exhaust upstream of the SCR catalyst. This generates a chemical reaction that breaks the exhaust (NOx) down into nitrogen and water vapor. (Illustration provided by Cummins Inc.)

U.S. EPA's off-road diesel emissions limits are phased in using the eight horsepower groups shown across the top line of this table. Under-75-hp engines had to meet Tier 4 final limits as of the first of 2013, and all engines must comply with Tier 4 final by 2015.
