CA Contractor Licensing Board: Contractors Failed to Meet Trade Standards for Workmanship

General contractor and subcontractors involved in Berkeley balcony collapse could face license suspension or revocation

Despite the District Attorney's decision to not file criminal charges against the contractors whole built the Berkeley apartment building balcony that collapsed last year killing six, the California State Licensing Board built a civil case and has since cited the five contractors for failing to follow construction guidelines. The Board found "poor workmanship" in the balcony's waterproofing that resulted in water damage, rot and the eventual collapse.

The contractors cited include the general contractor Segue Construction and subcontractors including:

  • Etter and Sons Construction
  • R. Brothers Waterproofing
  • North State Plastering
  • The Energy Store of California

It's now in the hands of the Justice Department for prosecution in state Administrative Court. The contractors face penalties including license suspension or revocation. The Board also wants the Justice Department to charge Etter and Sons with failing to cooperate with an investigation.
