Mack Trucks has delivered its first electric refuse vehicle to Royal Waste Services, Inc. as part of The Bronx Is Breathing: Reimagining a Cleaner Hunts Point initiative. The deployment marks a key milestone in bringing zero-emission transportation to a historically overburdened area in New York City.
The delivery is part of a $10 million award from the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program, aimed at addressing environmental and economic challenges in Hunts Point — home to nearly 13,000 residents and a hub for freight and waste activity.
The next-generation Mack LR Electric truck is designed for urban waste collection, with a 376 kWh battery system, regenerative braking, and a peak torque output of over 4,000 lb.-ft. It offers zero tailpipe emissions while maintaining the operational performance of its diesel counterpart.
The vehicle will operate out of a new freight-focused EV charging depot being developed by MN8 Energy in the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. The 3.2-acre site will house 32 fast chargers and support a range of electric vehicle classes.
As part of the broader initiative, the Fulton Fish Market Co-Op will also deploy four electric Mack MD medium-duty trucks to support clean logistics at the nation's largest fish market.
This delivery supports state and industry emissions goals, including Mack’s target to reduce CO₂ emissions per vehicle kilometer by 40% by 2030 and New York’s aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions 85% by 2050.
By electrifying local fleets, the project aims to cut freight emissions in one of the city's most pollution-burdened communities while advancing cleaner, more sustainable infrastructure.
