Update's to the Chicago Building Code — the first in 70 years — are intended to bring the city's construction requirements up to national standards and reduce barriers to cost-effective construction. The new code will be phased in starting in June 2020.
Updates to the code aim to make new construction and rehabilitation projects more affordable, streamline the permit process and encourage projects in underdeveloped neighborhoods. The new code will provide more flexibility and options for construction materials and promotes the use of green technologies and sustainable building best practices.
