Break Old Patterns, Do Something Different

The sentiment is similar to the old saying, “If you do what you have always done, you will get what you have always gotten.” The point is, thinking and talking about change is never enough, it requires action.

Ever get the feeling that everything and everybody is changing and you’re just stuck? It’s not that anything is wrong, per se, it’s just that you’re in a rut and you don’t know how to get out of it. It’s a frustrating state to be in when the more you crave and grasp for a renewed sense of inspiration, the more it eludes you. It can be doubly discouraging to see competitors thriving while your business remains in a holding pattern.

We’ve all been there. The question is, how do we break the pattern? In his Eye on Rental column in the June/July issue, Dick Detmer tackles the topic of finding your niche and focusing on it. As he points out, part of the challenge comes down to our innately human resistance to change.

Find and Focus On Your Niche

“It’s natural to simply keep doing what one is accustomed to doing, and it takes a concerted effort to even consider change,” Detmer writes. “But significant changes to what you are doing and how you are doing it could yield amazing results.”

The good news is prolonged stagnation ultimately leads to growth. It’s just a matter of time and the right catalyst. For some, however, the biggest obstacle is simply indecision over what path to take. We are certainly bombarded by an overload of choices in our world today, and the result can be immobilizing, hence the ruts we often find ourselves in.

As Detmer states, sometimes it takes an outside point of view to give us the clarity we need to make bold moves. Whether it’s a professional consultant or a trusted business associate or friend, getting that fresh insight could be exactly what you need to help you find the new approach or niche that will propel your business to the next level.

In the end, there’s no time to waste. Life is short. Competition is fierce. We all want to be inspired by the prospect of our own happiness and success, so don’t wait another minute to find yours.
