Miami Beach Requiring LEED Certified Buildings

New construction of structures bigger than 7,000 square feet must meet LEED Gold certification or builders will have to pay a fee

A new law that took effect on April 1 now requires new construction of structures bigger than 7,000 square feet to either meet LEED gold certification or better or builders will have to pay a fee. The fee is equal to 5% of construction costs.

Miami Beach's rule is similar to others enacted in Florida but requires more from builders. The city of Miami requires LEED silver certification for all new buildings larger than 50,000 square feet while Miami-Dade requires all new county-owned building to be LEED silver certified.
