Roadbuilding Contractor Settles $1M Fraud Case with FHWA

Federal investigation ruled that contractor had filed false reports claiming a firm doing work was a disadvantaged-business-enterprise company

C.W. Matthews Contracting Co., a roadbuilder in Georgia, has agreed to pay a $1 million fine as part of a settlement with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration after a federal investigation concluded that the contractor filed "false and misleading" reports that work had been done by a certified disadvantaged-business-enterprise (DBE) firm when it had not been done by a DBE firm. The contractor claims no wrongdoing and that the trucking firm that had claimed to be a DBE firm had been connected to C.W. Matthews through an acquisition of another company and had misrepresented itself as a legitimate DBE business.
