The Iowa Department of Transportation plans to spend a record $700 million for construction on state and interstate highway projects. The most the Iowa DOT had spent in the past was in 2014 when it spent $656 million on road projects. With the added benefits of a 10-cent-per-gallon gas tax increase that took effect March 1, the DOT is able to move up about $33 million in projects this year. Two of the state's top priorities will include repaving bridges and fixing 75 miles of reallocated roads.
The state expects to establish up to 500 work zones between now and the end of the road construction season in November.
