University of Massachusetts Professor Honored with ARTBA's Research & Education Division Award

Award recognizes individuals who make remarkable contributions to transportation education

Dr. John Collura, professor of civil engineering and director at the University of Massachusetts Transportation Center in Amherst, was awarded the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) prestigious “S.S. Steinberg Award” on January 14 during the association’s annual Research & Education Division (RED) meeting in Washington, D.C. Named after the founding president of the ARTBA’s RED, the award recognizes individuals who make remarkable contributions to transportation education.

Dr. Collura has established himself as a leader in the transportation profession by integrating research and technology transfer practices into teaching. Serving over 36 years in the industry, he has been heralded as a top notch educator and mentor; spurring the development of the next generation of researchers and practitioners.

Dr. Collura has played a pivotal role on workforce development issues and in identifying strategies to promote transportation as a career path. He served as co-chair for the “National Transportation Workforce Summit” held in the Nation’s Capital last April, is spearheading the Council of University Transportation Centers Workforce Development Taskforce, and chairs ITS America Forum on Research, Integration, Training, and Education. Dr. Collura is also a member of the Transportation Research Board Executive Board, the Committee on Education and Training, and a volunteer leader for the ARTBA RED.
