Nonresidential Construction Industry Added 17,000 Jobs in May

Nonresidential construction accounted for most of the industry's job gains in May, while the construction unemployment rate held steady at 4.1%.

The construction industry added 17,000 jobs in May, according to an analysis by the Associated Builders and Contractors of newly released U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Compared with a year ago, construction employment increased by 68,000 jobs, or 0.8%.

Nonresidential construction accounted for most of the gains, adding 15,700 positions during the month. Nonresidential specialty trade contractors led growth with 11,400 new jobs, while heavy and civil engineering construction added 2,600 positions and nonresidential building construction added 1,700.

The construction unemployment rate was 4.1% in May, while the national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%.
