Michigan Voters Reject Tax Increase for Roads

Swapping the state's 19-cents-per-gallon gasoline sales tax for a 14.9% wholesale fuel tax might have raised 1.3 billion annually for road and bridge construction

Michigan voters rejected increasing sales taxes to pay for schools and gas taxes to generate $1.3 billion annually for road and bridge construction, according to Governor Rick Snyder.

Snyder, who is considering running for the Republican presidential nomination, argued for the increase, saying Michigan’s damaged roads are inferior to those in neighboring Ohio and costly to motorists whose vehicles are damaged by potholes.
