Plans are in the works to build a new 10-story condominium tower above an existing 7-story apartment building in New York City. However, the new structure would not sit on top of the old building but reside above it with the bottom floor of the new structure and the top of the old building separated by a 6-foot gap.
The construction would be accomplished using a steel and concrete platform supported by a crisscrossing steel superstructure surrounding but not touching the lower building.
