Members of California's Senate have endorsed legislation that could generate $4 billion annually for repairs by increasing the gas tax 12 cents per gallon. The legislation would also boost vehicle registration fees up to $100.
California's current 42.35 cent gas tax only covers a fraction of the state's annual highway repair needs. Reauthorizing the tax hike, which is scheduled to expire in 2016, would provide about $1.5 billion a year for road repair.
