Federal Appeals Court Sides with Tappan Zee Constructors in Wage Dispute

Federal appeals court ruled arbitrator acted appropriately in reversing a decision about which union should do certain work on Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project

A federal appeals court has ruled an arbitrator acted appropriately last year when he changed his mind about which union should do certain work on the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project. That decision saved the bridge builder $7.3 million in labor costs.

Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) has been using carpenters instead of dockbuilders, who make more than the carpenters, to build formwork and columns on top the the bridge's concrete foundations. The arbitrator initially ruled that TZC should award the work to the dockbuilders but then reversed his decision and sided with TZC to award the work to carpenters.
