Q. What can you tell us about Anderson Commercial Concrete Inc.?

Devin DurbinDevin DurbinAnderson Commercial Concrete Inc.Anderson Commercial Concrete is one of the best companies you could ever ask to work for — a place that truly feels like home. Many of our team members have spent their entire careers here, starting and retiring with Anderson because of the family-like environment and shared pride in our work.

Founded in 1974 by Ken Chumbley, Anderson quickly became known for quality craftsmanship and dependable service. As the company grew, he brought his son Brett into the business to help manage projects and lead estimating while he faced some health challenges. Brett played a key role in expanding Anderson’s reach, developing new client relationships, and transitioning the company into a leading commercial contractor. Under his leadership, Anderson successfully completed large-scale projects for hospitals, schools, and major manufacturers, all while maintaining a steadfast commitment to professionalism, safety, and client satisfaction.

In 2017, Kevin Chumbley joined Anderson full-time after completing trade school, college, and gaining experience with other contractors. Kevin introduced new technological innovations to the company, inspiring the team to embrace modern tools and processes that improve efficiency and precision on every job. Today, Kevin serves as President, carrying forward the legacy of excellence established by his father and grandfather. Under his leadership, the company continues to advance through innovation and specialization in roller compacted concrete, foundations, floors, large scale paving, decorative concrete, epoxy coatings, and industrial machine bases. At Anderson, our clients remain our #1 priority, and our mission is simple — to deliver exceptional concrete solutions built on quality, integrity, and innovation.

Q. What brought you to the concrete industry?

What drew me to the concrete industry was the opportunity to learn so many different aspects of the trade and experience how challenging and diverse it can be from day to day. Every project brings something new to the table, and I enjoy the satisfaction of taking on each task and completing it successfully.

I began my career with Anderson in 2016, right out of high school, and have been fortunate to grow both personally and professionally alongside this incredible team. I’m proud to be a part of Anderson’s future as we continue to build on our strong foundation.

Q. It was mentioned that one of your goals was to continue to grow to be a leader. How have you addressed being a leader in your role as foreman finisher?

I focus on bringing out each team member’s individual strengths and making sure we work together effectively to complete every project. At the same time, I encourage both myself and my crew to recognize and improve on our weaknesses so we can continue to grow. For example, I’ve been working on developing my skills as a foreman — learning more about the management side of the job and taking the time to train coworkers and apprentices on more complex tasks. My goal is to help prepare the next generation to step into the roles of our experienced team members who will be retiring in the coming years.

Q. What new technologies has Anderson Concrete added recently? How have they affected the job? Your team?

Anderson has made huge strides in technology by incorporating total stations and GPS into most of our projects. These tools have transformed how we handle layout, grading, utility mapping, and concrete placement. The use of technology has greatly increased productivity and saved countless man-hours while making the work easier and more precise for our crews. For example, what used to require multiple people checking grades by hand can now be done by one person using GPS — allowing us to complete parking lots and other large areas faster and more efficiently than ever before. I’m especially excited to continue learning more about Trimble Siteworks and Trimble Roadworks, and to understand how to use these tools more efficiently and effectively on our projects.

Q. Your entry stated that you’re willing to go that extra mile. Where do you think that work ethic comes from? Can you share a job story on when you went above and beyond?

I believe I got my work ethic from my father and many others who have influenced me over the years. My dad could build or complete anything he set his mind to, and he instilled those same values in me as I helped him work on just about everything growing up. Because of that, I’ve always felt that with a little determination and practice, I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.

Recently, the office challenged me to take on a couple of large, complex projects running at the same time — all under a tight deadline. On top of that, I had the opportunity to utilize a mobile concrete crusher on-site for the first time. Working closely with our project manager, Kevin, we collaborated daily on scheduling and planning, using technology to share material needs and set weekly goals. It was a great example of teamwork, communication, and problem-solving under pressure, and it reinforced how much can be achieved when everyone works together efficiently.

Q. What was the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? How has this affected you?

The best piece of advice I’ve ever received was to never give up and never stop learning from others. You can achieve anything you set your mind to with practice and determination. That advice has truly shaped who I am today — it’s influenced both my work ethic and my outlook on life.

As a rising professional, what advice would you give to anyone new to the concrete industry?

As a rising professional, my advice is to take every opportunity that comes your way, jump in neck deep, and don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. Learn something from everyone you work with, take those lessons, make them your own, and then pass that knowledge on to others. Helping others grow is one of the most rewarding parts of the job, and it ensures that the next generation can become the best version of themselves.

Q. Say you run into a magic genie, but the stipulation was that your wishes had to be directly relevant to your job or the concrete industry in general. What are your three wishes? (Note that you can’t wish for more money or more wishes.)

  1. Innovation in Concrete: I would create my own technique or product that becomes widely known and used in the concrete industry — something innovative that makes work more efficient, precise, or durable, leaving a lasting mark on the trade.
  2. Leadership and Mentorship: I would continue growing as a leader and mentor, training and inspiring the next generation of concrete professionals so they can carry on the pride and craftsmanship Anderson is known for.
  3. Technological Advancement: I wish for continued advancement in construction technology — tools, equipment, and methods that make our jobs safer, faster, and more accurate, while keeping the hands-on skill and teamwork that make concrete work so rewarding.
