Sudberry Properties Chooses iCON Wall System for Mission Valley Development

Innovative wall system speeds up development while reducing costs.

To help overcome difficult land and soil conditions, Sudberry Properties has selected to utilize Concrete Contractors Interstate’s (CCI) proprietary iCON Wall Solution, which uses a horizontal method for casting and installing walls. iCON will be used to erect nearly 500 feet of retaining wall on a sloped hillside in Civita, a Sudberry Properties development, which is situated in a former Mission Valley rock quarry beginning this month. The iCON Wall Solution will facilitate a quicker and less expensive method for a zero cutback wall solution.

In San Diego County, and for much of Southern California, land that is available for development has challenging typography which makes erecting retaining walls in the traditional way impossible or cost prohibitive. However, the iCON Solution utilizes tilt up panels which allow for more flexible wall development and reduces overall construction time by as much as 30-40% while maintaining the structural integrity of the wall.

“At CCI we’ve been leaders in the concrete industry for over 30 years, which means we have to constantly evolve to solve construction problems,” says Russ Baumgartner, president of CCI. “The big issue now is that it’s becoming more time consuming and expensive to build than ever before. iCON allows us to save time and money for contractors while providing an exceptional level of structural performance. Needing a wall built into an existing slope without the use of a backfill, Sudberry Properties turned to CCI for a local solution that was both innovative and effective. In addition to cost and time savings, Sudberry Properties is known for embracing environmental solutions and social responsiveness, which helped guide them toward the iCON Solution.

“The big seller was that we wouldn’t have to worry about a pile and lagging system, which would have cost us time, money and energy. It also would have sacrificed a significant amount of the space for this project,” says Mark Radelow, vice president at Sudberry Properties. “iCON is giving us the most efficient solution possible without sacrificing any structural integrity or design. Our development will still look exactly how we want it to and we will be able to meet all of our deadlines. We couldn’t be happier with what we’re getting.”
