First RCC Project in Western MO is for Truck Parking

Last month, the first significant roller-compacted concrete (RCC) project in the region was completed in Joplin, Mo. The Petro Truck Stop on Interstate 80 selected RCC for a 200,000-square-foot truck parking lot addition. To stand up to future heavy truck traffic, the design section called for 8-inch thick pavement.

The contractor, McCarthy Improvement, based in Davenport, Iowa, set-up its own on-site portable continuous mixing plant, placed the concrete pavement with an asphalt paving machine, and then used a roller compactor to achieve the desired surface. RCC is frequently used for industrial or heavy-duty pavement. It has the strength and performance of conventional concrete with the economy and simplicity of asphalt.
