The AEMP Telematics Standard, ISO 15143-3, has been published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standard “specifies the communication schema designed to provide mobile machinery status data from a telematics provider's server to third-party client applications via the Internet.”
According to Stan Orr, president and CSO of the Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP), several industry professionals contributed. “The publication of this standard has been years in the making, and the industry has been well-served by the AEMP Technical Committee’s hard work and others in the industry who contributed,” Orr said.
The ISO mixed-fleet telematics standard is based on the first API (Application Programming Interface) standard originally developed by AEMP, then updated through the joint efforts of AEMP and AEM. It was submitted for acceptance to ISO to provide manufacturers, equipment users, fleet managers and all industry stakeholders with a standard they can use confidently across all market areas globally.
AEMP members involved with the ISO process, said that achieving the standard will benefit everyone in the machinery industry. Standardization like this focuses the development of new technology, and sharing and transparency that will foster other technological innovations and even new industries around the standard.
As one long-time AEMP supporter and telematics advocate has said, “The standard is getting its developmental legs, and businesses are looking at ways to use is to consolidate their data into software — smart people have been looking at the future of all these different pieces. We can barely imagine what we will have in 10 years because of the standard.”
Orr said that “The standard allows fleet managers and contractors to aggregate data into one display for easy analysis. The productivity advantages will be cumulative and the advances to cost-effectiveness are expected to be significant.”
AEMP’s training programs, especially for the Certified Equipment Manager (CEM) have fully integrated training about the standard. The CEM designation is the premiere professional credential for managers of off-road heavy equipment fleets or managers of municipal government fleets.
