What Does Success Mean to You?

Your personal definition of success will find its way into your business through the decisions you make, so why not ask yourself whether your business practices are bringing you closer to that ideal.

Success

Another year is coming to a close, and there’s no better time to reflect and take stock. What have we achieved? What have we left undone? What could we have done differently?

Many of us go through our days racing to and bracing for the next deadline or budget, with little time for big-picture questions.

In his blog #REALinkedIn, David Chase asks #30RealQuestions in an effort to empower others to accomplish their goals. One of those questions deals with the definition of success. He writes, “Success... the thing that everyone tells you that you need, but never asks you to define. A subjective, murky, and increasingly powerful word that means both nothing and everything.”

This got me thinking about my own definition of success. What does it mean to me? How do my friends and colleagues define it?

So I asked around. One friend said that to him, success simply means “happiness and contentment.” Another said it’s a combination of making a positive impact on others and stability, both financial and emotional. Yet another friend answered that success to her is being able to provide a loving and enriching life for her children.

I agree with all of the above, but for me it’s also got something to do with self reliance and a little bit to do with rich life experience. In the end, however, I think it comes down to inner peace... to be free enough from social and financial concerns to be able to act from a place of pure intention.

Whatever your personal definition of success is, it will find its way into your business through the decisions you make, both consciously and subconsciously. So why not ask yourself what success really means to you and attempt to determine if your business practices are bringing you closer to that ideal. The answers might have a significant impact on you, your employees, and your customers.

Cheers to a successful 2018!
