Saying Goodbye to 2021 – and Rental

The end of the year should bring about reflection into your business practices. But this time, it’s also made me reflect on mine.

I don’t know what it is about December, but it always seems to inspire a lot of reflection.

However, this year feels different with the challenges that 2021 presented us. After 2020, we all hoped that things would start to get better, and instead, we were met with challenges like labor shortages, supply chain shortcomings, and even more uncertainty.

However, the rental industry— despite all of those factors—has continued to mend itself and thrive in powerful ways. In fact, next year, rental is expected to grow 9.9 percent to reach $52.4 billion – a record for the industry.

That impending growth, on top of the business challenges, the mandates, and the lack of new equipment, definitely all demand rumination. For example, this is a perfect opportunity to ask yourself questions like, how is my business doing? What can be done better? What tools do we need to succeed? How can I adjust? How can I, and we as a business, continue to grow?

It might be scary, but without reflection, we remain stagnant. If we stay stagnant, we miss out on opportunities that can change our entire lives (and businesses) for the better.

Speaking of, dear Rental readers, this will be my last issue as your fearless leader. An opportunity presented itself that I wasn’t expecting, and it’s time for me to venture into unknown territory. I won’t pretend like it’s been an easy decision–more like the complete opposite–but it’s one that will hopefully offer me endless possibilities in this next season of life.

To be honest, I’ve loved my time here more than anything else in my professional career. Being the editor of Rental changed me in a lot of ways, but it ultimately made me a better writer, employee, professional, co-worker, and human. It breaks my heart to leave you, but I know this next journey for the both of us will be exciting and fortuitous.

So, thank you for your love and readership during my time here. Thank you for being open to my weird, wacky, and unique properties like my Star Wars-related issue, Rental Rundown, and Rental Perspectives. The people in this industry are top-notch, and the rental equipment space will always hold a very special place in my heart.

My closing advice to you is this: This month, and heading into 2022, I hope you all have the courage to reflect, to step outside of your comfort zone, and evolve in new ways that you might not have ever considered. The rental industry offers so much community and opportunity. Don’t let that go to waste!

As always, stay strong, Rental family.

Thank you, and I will miss you.
