The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is investing $2 million to explore ways to build taller wind turbines that can access stronger and more consistent high-altitude winds. These taller turbines can help wind farms get access to stronger winds and in turn get more wind energy than they currently can. Grant recipients including Iowa State University and Keystone Towers of Massachusetts.
Two projects in Iowa and Massachusetts are hoping to help reduce the cost of harnessing wind energy and expand the number of regions where wind turbines can be used, according to David Danielson, the assistant U.S. secretary for energy efficieny and renewable energy. Towers being built will reach heights of nearly 400 feet versus the 260 feet of current wind turbines.
