Short-term Spending Bill Could Postpone 2017 FAST Act Funding

House leaders unveiled another continuing resolution that would continue fiscal 2016 spending levels through the end of April

On Tuesday House leaders unveiled another continuing resolution that would continue fiscal 2016 spending levels through the end of April instead of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act's approved increase by $2.4 billion that was supposed to start in fiscal 2017.

“Instead of carrying out the promise of rebuilding our crumbling roads, bridges, and transit systems, the Continuing Resolution ignores the FAST Act transportation funding levels that were approved a year ago, resulting in a $2.4 billion reduction in transportation investment which will impact the next Spring’s construction seasons," said Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), ranking member on the Transportation Committee.

Top Democrats on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee had pleaded with appropriators to ensure the continuing resolution reflected the increased investment for highway, highway safety and public transit that were provided by the surface transportation bill.
