Republicans are proposing a $55 billion funding bill for the departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development. However, President Obama is threatening to veto the measure, known as THUD, saying the bill would underfund federal transportation and housing programs.
The bill, which was approved by the House Appropriations Committee in May provides $1.5 billion more than the current 2015 spending level but $9.7 billion less than President Obama's request.
“The bill freezes or cuts critical investment in transportation that creates jobs, helps to grow the economy and improves America's roads, bridges, transit infrastructure and aviation systems, benefiting towns and cities across the United States, as well as investments in ending homelessness, strengthening communities, and providing rental housing assistance for poor and vulnerable families,” the White House said in a policy statement.
