Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill (SB 465) providing more oversight to construction contractors as a response to the 2015 Berkeley apartment building balcony collapse that killed six and injured seven.
The bill will require contractors convicted of crimes related to thier work to report that information to the Contractors State License Board. It also mandates the board determine whether receiving construction defect settlement information would be useful to protect the public. Finally, the bill required the Building Standards Commission to look at improving safety requirements for balconies and other outdoor structures.
“It ensures that the state agencies tasked with overseeing the construction industry are taking appropriate steps to identify bad actors and improve building standards,” said Senator Jerry Hill (D-San Leandro) who authored the bill.
