President Trump has indicated that he plans to move forward with raising tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese imports from the current 10% up to 25% unless China agrees to open its country to competition from the United States. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2019. Trump is scheduled to meet with China's President Xi Jinping this week during a G20 summit in Buenos Aires.
A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said China hopes both sides can work toward a positive outcome.
