In its ongoing leadership role in the concrete industry,  BASF unveils Master X-Seed 55, a first-of-its-kind strength-enhancing admixture that improves both early- and late-age strength development in concrete.

This unique technology is a stable suspension of synthetically produced crystalline calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) nanoparticles that facilitate the growth of CSH crystals between cement grains and improve the overall hydration of portland cement. The technology’s strength-enhancing property permits a reduction in the total cementitious material content of a given concrete mixture while maintaining the concrete’s compressive strength.

“Given the X-Seed technology’s widespread success in Europe since its 2009 launch, we worked to develop a unique formula specifically designed for North America,” says Chris Eagon, Product Manager for the Admixture Systems Business of BASF’s Construction Chemicals Division in North America. “Master X-Seed 55 admixture utilizes CSH nanoparticles, along with other technologies, to facilitate and improve strength development at all ages of the concrete.”

Master X-Seed 55 admixture allows concrete producers to expand the performance space of a given concrete mixture and optimize the cementitious content. In addition, this new specialty admixture provides a strength safety factor, permits earlier stripping of forms to improve production efficiency, and promotes sustainable construction. It is recommended for use in ready-mixed and precast concrete, Green Sense® Concrete (environmentally-preferred concrete) and Self-Consolidating Concrete (SCC).
