NRMCA Hires Senior Director for Sustainability, Codes and Standards to Ensure, Promote Concrete's Role In Sustainability Efforts

Tien Peng will promote the use of concrete in sustainable construction

Silver Spring, MD -- July 19, 2011 -- The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has hired Tien Peng, LEED AP, CGP, PMP, as senior director, sustainability, codes and standards. He will be based in Seattle, where he will monitor and provide input to building code updates around the country to ensure ready mixed concrete's continued role as the material of choice. Peng will also provide technical expertise to the growing adoption of sustainability standards for buildings, making design professionals and legislators aware of concrete as a durable, long-lasting material that meets the needs of sustainable strategies. This includes the LEED rating system, Envision from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) and the International Green Construction Code (IgCC).

Prior to joining NRMCA, Peng consulted with private and non-profit organizations on operational excellence as a way toward sustainability and profitability. He is a longtime advocate of sustainability, promoting green building and social responsibility to various businesses and has spent over a decade in the building design and construction industry creating green homes, communities and commercial buildings. He has advised the Washington State Legislature on building code adoption as a member of the State Building Code Council. He also helped develop the LEED Homes rating system for the US Green Building Council (USGBC) as well as current versions of the BuiltGreen program, the Evergreen Development Standard and the new Integrative Design Process Standard released by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

"Tien's addition will help NRMCA continue to maintain a strong presence in the building code arena, ensuring the concrete's position is well represented," said NRMCA President Robert Garbini. "With the continued growth of green building standards, it is important that the concrete industry plays a key role in helping develop those standards."

Tien holds a master of architecture degree from the University of Houston and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from State University of New York at Stony Brook. His professional accreditations include LEED AP BD+C, Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA), Certified Green Professional (CGP) from the National Association of Home Builders, Project Management Professional (PMP), and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (LSSGB).
