CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Balfour Beatty Construction has a history of community involvement, and employees won't waste any time showing their commitment to their new neighbors during today's relocation of the company's Carolinas Division headquarters to Charlotte's Historic South End.

Workers will roll up their sleeves this morning at the Assistance League of Charlotte's Thrift Shop in South End to help the nonprofit agency prepare for a sale Saturday that will help fund activities that improve the lives of children and families.

"Together with our RT Dooley business unit, we have deep roots in Charlotte and a strong legacy of service to this community," said John Woodcock, president of Balfour Beatty Construction's Carolinas Division. "We're excited to join the South End neighborhood and look forward to playing an active role in this unique community for many years to come."

Relocating the division's headquarters to The Design Center at 1930 Camden Road will allow Balfour Beatty to consolidate its Charlotte operations under one roof for the first time since it acquired RT Dooley in February 2009. In addition to the RT Dooley business unit, which specializes in Corporate Headquarters and Interiors, the South End headquarters will house Balfour Beatty's Educational & Institutional, Mission Critical, and Corporate Services business units.

"When RT Dooley and Balfour Beatty Construction initially joined forces last year, the benefits for our clients were immediate. Now, by coming together under one roof, we're able to provide our clients with enhanced efficiency and greater results," Woodcock said.

The move also provides an opportunity for Balfour Beatty to make its Carolinas headquarters a showcase for the company's well-known commitment to sustainable construction. Balfour Beatty is seeking LEED silver certification for its retrofit of the 1930s-vintage building, which included water- and energy-saving features such as occupancy sensors that automatically shut off lights in unused rooms, use of regional construction materials, and installation of 16 new skylights to maximize natural light and increase thermal comfort. The close proximity to bus lines and located on the light-rail lines in addition to the office's location in a densely developed neighborhood; also contribute points toward the project's LEED certification goals.

Balfour Beatty will become the largest office user in the historic district, occupying nearly 30,000 square feet in The Design Center, comprised of three buildings featuring historic brick, expansive windows, and vintage architectural detail. About 90 employees are relocating to the new headquarters.
