From an earnest start in Virginia in 1970, Liebherr has built its U.S. business over the past five decades. Each decade and each customer served has positioned Liebherr in a leadership role in multiple industries, such as petrochemical, transportation, aerospace, construction, earthmoving and mining.
In addition to celebrating its 50th anniversary in the U.S. market, Liebherr is reaching another milestone in 2020 – the opening of an expanded headquarters in Newport News, VA. The new facilities will add 251,000 sq. ft. of space that will support employees in sales, service and product support. According to Liebherr, the expansion is evidence of the company's long-term commitment to the U.S. market and will position it to serve its customers for the next 50 years.
Liebherr’s innovative products will also be on display at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2020 from March 10 to 14. The company is showcasing an extensive selection of earthmoving and construction equipment at its outdoor booth #F5258 at the new Festival Grounds. Its product range of components for mechanical, hydraulic and electric drive systems will also be on display in the South Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center at booth #S84321.
Altogether, about 30 product types will fill more than 53,000 sq. ft. of exhibit space. Following are details about some of those featured products.
U.S. premiere of new generation of Liebherr crawler excavators
The Generation 8 crawler excavator series is made up of seven models ranging from 48,500 to 99,200 lb. and include the R 922, R 924, R 926, R 930, R 934, R 938 and R 945. Two machines of the product range, R 926 and R 938, will be exhibited for the first time in the U.S. at the Liebherr booth.
The highlights of the new crawler excavator generation include higher engine power, a heavier counterweight for higher bucket capacities, and minimal fuel consumption. A new equipment concept with a modified piece at the top of the boom is an innovative new feature. This leads to better performance and equipment forces with reduced operating weight of the machine. Another feature is the optimized load curve, which yields reduced fuel consumption. These machines have been specially designed to provide extra comfort and safety for the operator, as well as optimum ergonomics and performance on the job site.
North American premiere of Generation 8 crawler dozers
Liebherr is introducing its latest Generation 8 dozers to North America with the new PR 736. It is equipped with many features that further enhance operator comfort, excellent grading characteristics and new standard grading systems.
The PR 736 is powered by a newly developed Liebherr diesel engine belonging to the EVO series (217 hp) and meeting emission level Tier 4 Final. Customers in lower regulated markets have additional engine versions and equipment levels to choose from. The machine's operating weight is up to 56,218 lbs. To cover a large application range, various blade versions (straight, semi-U and 6 way blade) with capacities from 5.36 to 7.27 cu. yds. as well as many rear equipment options are offered.
Two new cranes for the American market
The LTM 1650-8.1 eight-axle mobile crane travels with an axle load of 26,400 lbs. complete with its 177-ft. telescopic boom and front supports. To minimize set-up time, however, the rear supports are installed as complete support box in a single hoist and connected using quick-release couplings.
Enhanced lifting capacities and low cost transport are the main features of Liebherr’s new 880-ton crawler crane. The LR 1800-1.0 industrial crane is designed for jobs with a luffing jib and derrick system, such as power plant construction and the petrochemicals industry. For the first time, the boom system features lattice sections with three system dimensions which can be telescoped into each other for transport.
North American premiere for wheel loader assistance systems
Liebherr will present four wheel loaders at the show, including the L 566 XPower with standard power-split travel drive and numerous new assistance systems, which are being shown for the first time in North America. These systems include active personnel detection, adaptive working lighting, an integrated tire pressure monitoring system and the weighing system with Truck Payload Assist. The L 566 XPower also has the new joystick steering for wheel loaders.
The largest Liebherr wheel loader, the 71,870-lb. L 586 XPower, will also be at the exhibition stand. With a power split XPower drive, it delivers high performance and enhanced fuel savings. The L 538 is equipped with parallel kinematics for high holding forces in the upper lift arms area. It is suited for working in heavy-duty industrial applications such as in recycling with high dump buckets.
For customers from countries in Central and South America, Liebherr is showing the L 550 wheel loader as a representative of the separate wheel loader series for less emission-regulated markets.

- the A 920 Litronic wheeled excavator with an operating weight of 40,300 to 47,000 lbs. and an engine output of 175 hp, as well as the A 922 Rail Litronic railroad excavator with an operating weight from 45,000 to 51,600 lbs. and an engine power of 163 hp
- the LH 30 M Industry Litronic and LH 60 M Industry Litronic material handlers
- the THS 110 D-K crawler concrete pump with a maximum output of 133 cu. yds.
- the HS 8200 duty cycle crawler crane in the 200-tonne category and featuring a newly designed drive system
- the 125 K fast-erecting crane with a radius of 180 ft. and a maximum hook height of 215 ft.
- the 340 EC-B Flat-Top series crane featuring a maximum radius of 256 ft., maximum lifting capacity of 26,450 lbs. and maximum hook height of 301 ft.
- the hydraulic double motor DMVA D 165-165, hydraulic pump DPVG 140 and size 85 of the series 20 of the LH30VO medium pressure pump
- the in-line diesel engine D976, Liebherr’s biggest and most powerful in-line engine with a displacement of 1,098 cu. in. and a standard power range from 469 to 843 hp
- an upgraded bearings portfolio including the super-size seamless slewing bearings of up to 31.17 ft.
