Carbon Monoxide can build up in your home or apartment when a generator is running nearby, but you’d never know it since it is odorless and colorless.

Experts say opening windows and or using fans will not prevent CO buildup. The CDC says never use gas or coal-burning equipment inside your home or garage. Keep it outside, and at least 20 feet from windows, doors and vents. If a carbon monoxide detector activates, leave your home and call 911.

Firefighters strongly urge you to never “backfeed” power into your house wiring by plugging the generator into a wall outlet. They call it extremely dangerous, and say it can pose an electrocution risk to utility workers and neighbors on the same utility transformer.
