Glass Crushing Plant Helps Village Turn Recycling Expense into Profits

Glass takes 1 million years to break down into its natural state and costs the village of Los Lunas $33.66 per ton to bury, $340,000 per year. The purchase of a glass crushing plant turned this huge expense into a growing profit.

The Glass Plant was installed in August 2015 at the Solid Waste Division’s transfer station located in Los Lunas, New Mexico. It runs two to three times a week for about an hour per day, crushing glass to a 3/8-inch size.

Caltrans Looks to the Sun for Transportation

Caltrans will explore SolaRoad technology which implements the use of solar panels in roadway projects and has been successfully implemented in a project in Krommenie, The Netherlands.

The two-way cycling lane that connects Krommenie and Wormerveer, two suburbs of Amsterdam, is the test section for SolaRoad. The goal is to eventually convert all roads, even those driven by cars and other vehicles, to solar roadways. According to the SolaRoad’s official website, if all U.S. roads were paved with solar panels, the country would produce three times as much energy as it uses today and cut CO2 emissions by 75 percent.
