Hochtief Wins $1.23 Billion CA High-Speed Rail Contract

Flatiron subsidiary and joint-venture partner Dragados USA land contract to build a 60 mile portion of new high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco

Hochtief’s team – Dragados USA Inc. and Flatiron West Inc., collectively known as DFS – has signed a $1.23-billion contract to construct 65 miles of the planned 520-mile high-speed rail line between San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The design-build contract for the segment known as California High Speed Rail Package 2-3 was awarded by California High-Speed Rail Authority.

The segment runs through California's Central Valley and the counties of Fresno, Tulare, and Kings and the cities of Hanford, Corcoran and Allensworth.

The project calls for construction of at-grade, aerial, and possible below-grade sections of high speed rail line, relocation of existing BNSF tracks for approximately 5.5 miles, possible crossing of existing BNSF railroad tracks, construction of waterway and wildlife crossings, and roadway reconstructions, relocations, and closures.

Design work is expected to take 18 months, with construction slated to start in late 2016 and continue for four years, Flatiron said.

The San Francisco-to-L.A. rail link is slated to open by 2029. The cost is currently estimated at $68 billion, which would make it the most expensive public-works project in U.S. history.
