FAA Warns Proposed Miami Towers May Be Too Tall

Preliminary FAA findings could mean six planned Miami high-rise towers would face height restrictions

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has sent developers of six planned high-rise Miami towers "notice of presumed hazard" letters warning that the towers could obstruct or have an adverse physical or electromagnetic effect on aircraft landing at Miami International Airport. The FAA is suggesting height cuts for all the towers, but further study could ease just how drastic those height restrictions may be.

The FAA has suggested two towers by developer Related Group be reduced from 520 feet to 445 feet and from 635 feet to 465 feet. Developer Florida East Coast Realty's letter suggest reducing its planned 955-foot residential building to 489 feet.

The other towers include a 622-foot mixed-use project which could be reduced to 421 feet, a 969-foot-tall hotel which the FAA suggests be cut down to 457 feet tall, and a 644-foot tower which could be dropped down to 467 feet.

The developers have 60 days to request the FAA conduct further study and open for public comment. That process could take an additional 120 days.
