Beacon Restoration Inc. has settled with the New York City Comptroller and agreed to pay $364,000 to immigrant workers who helped install a new roof at the Port Richmond Water Pollution Control Plant in 2010 and 2011. The contractor apparently cheated 24 workers out of prevailing wages and benefits.
The comptroller's investigation revealed Beacon had submitted falsified payroll reports. While employees should have been receiving $64 per hour on some days, the investigation found that their salaries were closer to $140 to $180 per day.
As part of the settlement, Beacon Restoration and its owner have been barred from public works in New York state for the next five years.
