Regardless of the form or formliner chosen, there are some general use considerations. Most of these products are impervious to chemicals, so integral color and other additives can be put in the concrete mix. An appropriate release agent should always be used. Check with the form or formliner manufacturer for compatible products.
Reusable formliners require proper storage to maximize their life. They should be protected from moisture and sunlight when not in use. Most materials degrade when exposed to long term intense sunlight. Not only will this reduce the liner's life, this degradation could discolor the concrete surface. Surface temperatures above 140 degrees will cause permanent thermal distortion and diminish the formliner's physical properties by 70 to 80 percent. Once attached to the formwork, formliners should be stored on edge to prevent liner damage.
Forms should be removed within 24 hours after concrete placement to prevent sticking and degradation of the liners. Care should be taken to avoid damaging the concrete or the formliner during stripping. If a formliner is damaged, it may be possible to repair it with super glue or expanding foam. Forms and formliners should be cleaned as needed after each use.
