Stan Orr, FASAE, CAE, who Chief Executive Officer has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Equipment Management Professionals since 1998, announced his retirement following the March 2019 AEMP Annual Meeting. Senior VP Cindy Challis Orr, CAE, will also be retiring.

The announcement was made during the organization’s annual meeting during the Future of the Organization address by the 2018 Chairman of the Board Greg Peet, CEM, Corporate Equipment Manager for the Helm Group and President of Heavy Equipment Services.

“Stan has done a masterful job in leading AEMP from a staff perspective as CEO for more than 20 years now, and Cindy has been integral to those efforts as well.  He has helped to shape the association and quite literally the position of equipment manager into the highly skilled and specialized profession it has become today.  AEMP’s influence now reaches around the world in terms of the training it provides and efforts like the recently released ISO 15143-3 telematics standard,” said Peet. “We owe a debt of gratitude to Stan and Cindy for all of their hard work and dedication but more importantly for the strong position they are leaving the association in.  For those reasons and many more we wish them the very best in their retirement.”

According to Orr, "It has been an honor to have been given the opportunity to serve as CEO of AEMP for the past 20 plus years. The friendships made, and the professional relationships developed over the years, have deeply impacted Cindy and me both personally and professionally.”

He continued, “Being awarded a front row seat to watch the evolution of the equipment management profession has been nothing short of amazing. We look forward to watching AEMP continue to grow and thrive under new staff leadership. With an incredible team of staff professionals already on hand driving the advancement of AEMP’s Mission and Vision, we are confident the new CEO will experience great success immediately and will take AEMP to even greater heights of success.”

During Orr’s tenure the association significantly grew its impact on the industry. It raised awareness of and addressed many critical issues facing the industry and the profession, including safety, telematics, workforce development, and more. AEMP’s certification program, the Certified Equipment Manager, is considered the premier credential for the equipment management profession. AEMP’s conferences and online education have experienced steady growth in attendance as more and more equipment professionals turned to AEMP for education and training needs. Today AEMP globally trains thousands of fleet professionals annually.

AEMP introduced the industry’s first Green Fleet Certification and led the industry in the development of the world’s first telematics standard. In 2016 the “AEMP Standard” became ISO15143-3 of the International Standards Organization. AEMP has continued that effort, working in partnership with the leading industry associations to advance telematics to other technology-enabled heavy equipment, including cranes and MEWPs.

In 2017, AEMP received the Summit Award from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). The Summit Award is the association industry’s highest honor, awarded to those organizations that have dramatically changed a profession or industry.

During Orr’s tenure, AEMP coined the phrase “Equipment Triangle” which became the cornerstone philosophy regarding the multi-tiered relationship between the customer, manufacturer, and distributor. The philosophy was created in concert with the profession’s first Standards of Ethical Conduct for equipment managers and has been a driving force in the organization’s ability to provide a place for all sides of the Triangle to gather and work together to solve industry challenges.

In 2017 AEMP embarked on a governance reorganization with the goal of expanding its strategic capabilities. The process is expected to be completed and implemented in 2018.

According to Peet, “Stan has worked extremely hard with the board and executive committee to set the stage for a smooth transition, from our efforts in governance to assisting us as we prepare for a new strategic plan once the new chief staff officer has been retained.”

A Transition Team has been appointed by Chairman Peet.  Co-Chaired by Orr and Peet, the team will include Chairman Elect Mason Ford, CEM, Director of Equipment Services for Skanska USA Civil, Secretary Treasurer David Bolderoff, CEM, Fleet Manager for the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles, and Immediate Past Chairman Don Gengelbach, CEM, Equipment Supervisor for Mulzer Crushed Stone. The Transition Team is charged with finding Orr’s replacement by January 2019, when he will step aside and work in an emeritus role, assisting the new CEO in final preparation for AEMP’s 37th Annual Meeting in March 2019. Both Stan and Cindy Orr will remain in a consulting role through July 1, 2019.
