Shippensburg School Officials Thank Volvo for Assistance

Volvo Construction Equipment picks up the $20,000 tab for paving projects at a local school.

Shippensburg Area School District officials discovered this fall how beneficial it can be to have good neighbors. When the Shippensburg Area Senior High School faced a need for a paving project, Volvo Construction Equipment stepped in and did the work free of charge.

Meg Dameron represented the company at a recent SASD school board meeting. Dameron is the communications manager at the Shippensburg Volvo facility, which is located at 312 Volvo Way behind the high school.

"Volvo values the work the school district does in the community," Dameron said. "Since the Shippensburg factory builds road construction equipment, paving the high school entrance was a logical way to help the school district."

"A community member approached Volvo," SASD Superintendent Kris Carroll said. "We were very grateful that Volvo provided the paving for us. We're very happy about the wonderful partnership that exists between Volvo and SASD. It's a very healthy partnership."

Volvo hired a local contractor, Snoke's Excavation & Paving, to spruce up school lots using a Volvo Construction Equipment asphalt compactor. The compactor was a demonstration unit from Volvo's training school.

Volvo picked up the tab of $20,000 in labor and material costs. The job was completed in late October.

"We have a good relationship with our next door neighbors and we have helped the schools with other activities," Dameron said. "For example, we use forklifts to help the FFA unload their annual order of citrus fruit."

"We like to recognize generous contributions made to the school district," Carroll said. "It's important to accentuate the positive contributions made to the district. We wanted to say thank you."
