There may be no better time than now to be considered a top employer in the construction industry.

Best Contractor Award 605913e528dd4

There may be no better time than now to be considered a top employer in the construction industry. Companies are competing for a small pool of workers to complete a backlog of projects. By some estimates, the United States has been short 1 million construction workers this year, as not all employees have returned to work, due to various factors tied to the COVID-19 pandemic and as workers have retired in record numbers, all while the housing market has been booming.

In this market, it’s the nice guys, or gals, who finish first. The construction companies that offer a positive workplace environment, good pay, training and opportunities for advancement are the ones that are winning the workforce shortage. The past year presented an enormous challenge for construction companies. Any employer who was able to retain and attract happy employees deserves some credit.

To recognize those companies, the staff of Equipment Today, Asphalt Contractor, Concrete Contractor, ForConstructionPros.com and Pavement Maintenance and Reconstruction hosted the inaugural Best Contractor to Work For recognition program. Employees were able to nominate their employers for the award by filling out a survey. After a few months of tallying and analysis, the results are in.

How the Recognition Program Works

To be considered, employers needed to register, and employees filled out surveys about what it’s like to work for their boss. Entry forms and surveys were handled by Best Companies Group, which analyzed the data and created an insights report based on the results.

To be eligible, construction companies must have 15 full- or part-time employees working in the U.S. The company’s primary business activity must be either general building construction, earthmoving, paving, concrete or specialty and trades, such as underground, utility, electrical, HVAC, demolition and others.
