For the first time in history Freightliner claims the number one market share position in the North American Class 6/7 truck market. The company attributes its gains to its recent push into vocational products such as the 108SD and M2 106.
The company says it sold 36.9 percent of the Class 6 and 7 trucks in the NAFTA market in 2012. January, usually a strong month for Freightliner, is off to a very strong start as well.
“Our goal is to secure the number one position,” says Dave Hames, general manager, Daimler Trucks North America. The company is in the third year of a five-year plan to penetrate the vocational market.
In vocational products Freightliner now offers a complete line of GVWs up to the Class 8 114SD. But the key to the vocational markets is offering options that allow the trucks to fill the specific market niches.
One area of particular interest is the construction market. “Construction is a dog fight with huge opportunity,” notes Hames. This segment represents up to 24 percent of the vocational market.
